For the whole of 2019, the FAO Food Price Index, which tracks monthly changes in international prices of daily traded food commodities, was up about 1.8 percent from 2018, but was still 25 percent below its peak in 2011. Statistics show that the World Food and Agriculture Organization food price index in December 2019 increased by 2.5% compared with November, the highest value since December 2014.
Specifically, the vegetable oil price index in December 2019 rose by 9.4% compared with November, rising for the sixth consecutive month. The prices of soybean oil, sunflower oil and rapeseed oil rose one after another. The lowest value in the past year. The dairy price index rose by 3.3% in December 2019 from November, with cheese prices rising by almost 8%, the most due to tighter export supplies from the European Union and Oceania. The grain price index in December 2019 increased by 1.4% compared with November, mainly due to the increase in import demand in China, the ongoing protests in France, and the impact on transportation, but the price quotations of corn and rice remained basically stable. The December 2019 Meat Price Index, which was largely unchanged from the November revision, was up 18% from the same period in 2018, as pork prices rose on strong import demand from Asia and festive demand from the European Union and Brazil.
